We have had visitors to this site from all of the United States and from fifty foreign countries. Below are some of their comments. |
My class and I are reading a story on the Pony Express in our readers. They are very impressed with the information on the site. It is difficult for me to find a site that second graders can read for themselves. Yours was the most readable for them. Thank you for encouraging them to read and learn more about American history.

I am currently a detachment commander of a postal unit stationed in Iraq. I am attached to a Cavalry Regiment and have adopted the radio call sign "Pony Express". We, of course, have traded in our horses for modern day vehicles, but have kept our stetsons and spurs. Thanks for the history!

My family stopped in St Jo and visited the first station during our recent vacation to the Black hills in SD. It was incredibly fascinating and very fun for both my wife and our kids (aged 3 to 12!).
On the way back from SD, we drove along I-80 in Nebraska and stopped at several PE stations both right off the highway and a little farther away. It was and still is amazing to me the way this was set up. What great forsight these guys had in terms of service and business process! It is too bad that technology was right on their heels....
I am looking forward to finding out more about the people and their energy as to why they did this and the trials and tribulations, from the owners to the riders, and also more about why it failed.

I found this web site through a newspaper article. I was very glad to note the times that the Pony Express came through each location so that I could take my daughter to see the exchange. I found the site easy to get around on to find my information. I really love the news on the trail.

I am SO impressed with your pages on the Pony Express. I was born and
grew up in St. Joseph, MO but I still learned a lot from your website. The
reason I am writing is that this summer (June 16 - July 11) I am teaching 4th and
5th graders about the Pony Express. We are putting on a play at the end of
the session called "Pony Express Rider" by L.E. McCoullough. I want the kids to
have lots of background info. because actors can do a better performance if
they understand what they are performing. You
have written your website so that anyone or any age can understand it.

I enjoyed browsing this site. I'm saving it for a while so that I might tell my daughter about it who is a Special Education Teacher and is always looking for new items to introduce to her class etc. I am primarily a geneaologist and when I see things like this my interest lye somewhat in the history as well as the names listed that I might be able to link to my progenators. I found the site very easy to navigate and will return to it again. I have bookmarked it for future review. Thank you for all your efforts in bringing forth this information for all to read and enjoy.

Pioneer history which includes the Pony Express is fascinating. I had ancestors who walked the plains to Salt lake City, including my little grandmother who was 8 years and the oldest at that time of 6 children in 1859. Almost any information of that time is of interest. I think I will never forget the letter I read this morning from Pony Express Rider L.L.Hickok to his wife, a letter from the Bancroft Library Collection. Bancroft, another fascinating story...how, early on he collected and saved for the future every kind of information about those early days. Your site is great!
Utah/Arizona
The web site is very informative and easy to navigate. I am
also interested in this topic, because I was born in St.
Joseph and taught 4th grade at Neely El. School for several
years. We made many walking field trips to the stables.

Very easy to navigate -- as long as you follow anything along the trail of "Pony Express," you can't go wrong.

Our Youth camp this summer is using the theme the pony express carries the mail around the world and our dining hall is to be made to look like a pony express station for all the dramas and meal time activity.

This is a request for assistance in correcting an error that I believe degrades (or at least compounds the ignorance) of the Pony Express. Let me explain:
IBM makes a computer program called Lotus Notes. It is very popular in offices across the country. The older versions offered an email letterhead called "Pony Express" that depicted a cactus and a Pony Express rider. However, the newer version (R5)letterhead called "Pony Express" depicts a Chinese or Mongolian type rider on a rearing horse. Now, how could an American company that is an icon of American technology allow that to happen? I think it an insult to our American Western heritage and I would ask anyone who agrees to send emails to IBM telling them so.

I think that this web site should be viewed by all who want to learn as much as I do. I might even download some pages to teach my friends .

I enjoyed this site and think it does a great job. I am New Zealand author writing about crossing the US by train which I have just done. I was in Sacremento and know the pony express operated out of there and needed some information..thanks!

This is an informative and interesting site. I have visited the USA many times over the years and this year 2002 took the opportunity of driving from Salt Lake City via Wendover, Ely and route 50 through Austin and Fallon to Reno. I realised later that we had probably followed part of the Pony Express trail without knowing it. It was certainly a memorable experience and I intend to read up on the Pony Express and visit other places on our next trip.

William Russell of the pioneer freighting firm of Russell, Majors and Waddell was my great great grandmother's brother. Her name was Emma Marcia (Russell) Avery. I have an old photograph of her with her daughter, my great grandmother, Frances Emma Avery. Also ,handed down to me, I have a copy of the book "The Pony Express or Blazing The Westward Way" by William Lightfoot Visscher. The book is a prized family posession.

One of our horses was used at Hanover by an NPEA rider to transport the torch. It was in the middle of the night, so it was even more dramatic. The whole event was emotional, making the Olympics very personal for us that year. It's wonderful to see a site that is attempting to keep the memory of the Pony Express and it's meaning to yesterday's settlers and today's communication alive.

Hello! My hobby is researching old mining camps & ghost-towns, then finding & photographing them. (mostly what's left of them!)
Your site was a link from Bob Rankin's "Tourbus". It's an interesting newsletter that he writes. You'll probably get LOTS of "hits". I don't have much knowledge about the pony express, but now with your book list, I'll have fun "boning-up"! In a few months, I'll E-you again and report on my progress. It would be interesting to hear you speak on the Pony Express someday!

Kansas
Everything was really easy to navigate, and very informative. I initially was interested in the Pony Express as I grew up reading a lot about the west and had read some about the Pony Express riders. Then, a few years ago my dad told me he thought the Pony Express had come thru close to where he lived in Seligman, Missouri. I have not been able to confirm this, but thought it was interesting where he said it had a station in an old post office/store. At any rate, it's really interesting reading about it.

Just visited Ft. Churchill, NV. I had no camera so I used your site to share the experience with a friend who will no doubt make their own trip there soon. Tom Crews (movie star)... excellent job and a lot of work on this site. Very well laid out. Your work is appreciciated. Best laid out site of complex subject I've ever seen. Folks at Virginia City should commission you to do a site for them. V.C. tourist sites are fragmented and incomplete.

You've got a heck of a website! I've also got a website on the History Ring and I'm trying to peruse through all the websites to see what each has to offer. I would say so far yours is by far one of the best. I visted your site since I have an interest in Pony Express history. I also attached an award "For Outstanding History" that I give to websites that I think deserve recognition. Normally it's an award that can't be applied for, I just give it out when I see fit, thus it makes it more valuable.

I just wanted to thank you for all of the work you have done, a labor of love and hobby on the Pony Express. I am the mother of a homeschooled fourth grader. I am using a literature approach to California History using text books and the state standards for my curriculum. We are currently reading "Riders of the Pony Express" by Ralph Moody. It's a perfect book for his age.
The only discrepancy I have found concerns Buffalo Bill. So why is there a bit of confusion? Moody says that Buffalo Bill was a great rider, but is doubtful that he rode for the mail. He says that Bill was 14 at the time of the Pony Express and was a messenger boy at Leavenworth, Kansas. He also says that Wild Bill Hickok worked on theroute as a stableman in Rock Creek, but not as a rider. So what should I tell Luke? This book was written in 1958. Since I don't have the time to really look into this, I am anxious to hear your opinion! There are conflicting reports about the characters of John Fremont, John Sutter and Kit Carson, I enjoy reading as much as I can. I grew up in Philadelphia, so these history lessons are all new to me. I am loving being in 4th grade!
I really appreciate the map that you have on one of the weblinks that shows every station. I printed them and glued the pages together so as Luke reads his book, he can follow the riders through the stations. They were brave boys and men. The pictures of the mochila really brought part of the story to life. Again, thanks for all of your work.

In searching for Rawleigh's parentage I have been checking out people he associated with and I noticed that George Taylor married a Mary Waddell, Elizabeth's sister. I search anywhere I can. Though I discovered this site mainly by accident I have found it to be very informative and easy to browse through. A lot of hard work and research has gone into the compilation of the site and as I am very interested in the social history of America I learned a great deal about a subject about which I admit I was fairly ignorant. I will return, as General McArthur once said. Meantime good luck with your future efforts.

I found the site pretty easy. I am an Instructional Assistant in my local school district.
My family and I crossed the trail near Austin, NV and my vacation pictures have touched off a flurry of questions from my 4th graders, I have also always been fascinated in the Express. I
was thrilled to actually, finally see a real part of the Trail. Thanks for this site!
Davisburg, MI
I am in 10th grade and I absolutely love history about the Pony Express. I knew a little bit about the Pony Express from school and the History Channel(!) but I wasn't really hooked until I saw the show "The Young Riders". I know it isn't exactly factual, but it is really great show. This really sparked my intrest. Now I am always "surfing" trying to find info about the Pony Express and looking for maps of the routes and any other info about the 1860's or the west. Thank you so much for your great site!
Southern Maryland
While visiting the Home Station in St. Joe, Mo. i noticed
several pictures on the walls of various stations. Do you
know if there has been a compilation of known station pictures been made into one collection, book etc.? (Note: Check out BOOKS Page.) Would love to have one.
I found this site to be most informative with material i have not seen anywhere else. Fantastic is the word i am looking for. Good luck and keep 'riding'.
Blythe, California
What a great site! Yours is by far, the most complete and
comprehensive site out there on the Pony Express. As a 130
lbs(soaking wet) Cavalry reenactor (43rd Va. Cav., Mosby's
Rangers) I have always felt an affinity for the express
riders. It was interesting to read that they carried
virtually the same weapons that I do in my endeavors. I was
also struck by the similarity (except for the horn) between
the typical express rider's saddle and a U.S. Cav MacClellan
saddle. Both are light, low cantled and comfortable for
both horse and rider. I am certainly going to recommend
your site to my fellow cavalry reenactors (one of whom is a
public school educator) as a good sidelight to what was
going on in the "horse world" of our time period. Keep up
the good work. If you are interested, when we get our web
site up and running, I will forward the address to you.
43rd Bttn. Va. Cav. (Mosby's Rangers)
This is a wonderful site. I have a long list of books now to get and read. I have always heard that my great grandfather rode for the Pony Express and am always looking for articles hoping that I someday find his name, which by the way was Luther H. Palmer. Thank you again. I will be back here often.

I think this site is one of the easiest sites to navigate. I am writing a research paper in English class right now, and this site's history page has been a tremendous help in my research. Especially because it was so well done. Thank you for this terrific and informative site.

The site is great. Instead of going to the library and getting all the books it is all right here. I was wondering, have you ever heard of an activity that allows students to make their own mochillas. I am a student teacher and some one told me about this activity once, but
I have not been able to find anything about it. Can you help? The site is very easy to navigate. You buttons are great and stuff is just well organized. Your titles make me want to click every link to learn more. Great Job!

The wife & I was talking about the pony express this morning driving to work. When I got back home I brought up my netscape & typed in Pony Express & got right on. We were both surprised how short lived the Pony was. I thought it was much, much longer. Haven't explored all the features yet, but think its a very good, & easy site to read. thanks a lot.

You should put pictures on here of some of the horses but I have not been to all of the pages so maybe you do. One of the reasons I was interested is because I am a big horse fan and love to train horses and just go on joy rides. I also have my own little club that we ride together and we have days that we clean up the tac room well, I guess I better go look at the other pages!

I grew up within 10 miles of Bill Cody's boyhood home and am interested in all local history. It is refreshing to see history portrayed as it really happened. Keep it up, don't let our young people get their history from Hollywood.

My Great-Great Grandfather was Amos "Mose" Wright. Reading about his life I can see where I have gotten my dramatics and my love of exagerating stories!!! Amos was a great man who did so much with his life and his family is still benefiting from it!!!!!

Congratulations on your fine web page. Your coverage of the

I love the West. I love the history of the Pony Express and courage and individualism of the original riders. I Loved visiting St Joseph and the museums there.

I am from the Basque country, and had never heard of the Pony Express until today.
Good Site!
San Sebastian, Spain
First of all, let me applaud you for an excellent web page! I linked in from the Sept. 2000 National Trails Symposium, Redding CA, web site.
As an endurance rider, I have ridden the XP trail from Salt Lake City (Camp Floyd) to Carson City, NV (750 miles in 15 days, 1991), and back and forth many times since. I've don't point-to-points and loops. I have logged about 2,000 miles on this stretch of XP trail and I love it. There is no finer adventure.
I'm sure you are aware of Dave Nicholson, DVM, and his XP 2001 ride next year. I hope to join part of this event.
As a final comment: there are efforts underway to make the whole Pony Express trail a national trail, with full permanent protections where possible, etc., etc. I am quite concerned that when that happens, equestrians will be barred from riding this trail, as has happened on the Oregon Trail and other trails originally made by horsemen, now forbidden to horsemen. This would be an injustice of the first order, yet some misguided people will use the opportunity to restrict this historic trail to hikers only, or worse yet, hikers and mt. bikers only. We Must Not Let This Happen!
San Anselmo, California
Nice site, I'm coordinating coverage for the Carson City newspaper and it gave me information I needed to know when the riders will be here.
Carson City, Nevada

Did not see Pony Tales in my first search. What a fascinating history. These guys were either fearless, or FOOL HEARTY! Their commitment to a job and their oath are inspiring and they would be wonderful role models for kids today. Good luck, great job!
Florida
just a short note to say how informative your site is. my interest was rekindled by the article in national geographic which i read only recently. doctors and dentists in Australia are fond of keeping such magazines in their waiting rooms. naturally I'd read of the pony express when i was a boy and of course there were numerous references on the countless American westerns we watched on television and prior to 1956, at the cinema. of course we didn't call it the cinema but "the pictures". one spoke of going to the pictures. anyway, thanks for your excellent site. cheers.
Sydney, Australia
I really enjoyed looking at this page. It helped me learn a lot.

interesting. This web site has many informational things on it.
I have always thought that the pony express was cool because of
the way people would just get on carriage and carry mail and
news across the United States. Anyway I am ten years old and
I loved your web page. It is a true eyebrow raiser. I enjoyed
learning things that I had never heard before. Thank you for such a great web page.

We have been studying the Westward Expansion portion of our nation's history and today decided to find some web sites that could assist us on the subject of the Pony Express. The children and I have enjoyed our visit and now know where we can return next time we have a question on the Pony Express. Thank you.

Growing up as a child in Europe, I was in love with the American West...but especially the Pony Express. From the time I was five years old and first heard of the magnificent riders, I would get on my own horse and pretend to carry the mail just as the horsemen of old did. That fun game as a child has turned in to a real thirst for Pony Express history, and of all the websites I have seen, yours is the best, my friend. You have put together a great multitude of information in an incredibly easy to navigate format. The way you have subdivided the sections makes accessing the information the reader wants as easy as the click of a button--something I wish I could have had all those years ago when I used to research this topic on my own. Keep up the great work and I will be back many times!
March 2005

I really enjoy this website! It is so jam-packed with information, my history class is going to be overwhelmed by how much I have to teach them!( I am an 11th grader, and we have projects where we teach each other about various subjects) I chose the Pony Express because I have always loved horses, and there are so many people involved that there are literally thouseands of stories to dig up and share. I wish I could join the re-Act NPEA event, but it would be difficult since I live in Alaska :). Thank you so much for having all this fascinating information right at my fingertips!

The site is easy to navigate. My wife and I just spent a week in Ely, Nevada. We did some exploring around Cherry Creek and Schellbourne. We decided to run the trail from Schellbourne to Ruby Valley. Our vehicle is a 75 Bronco, kind of appropriate. It was an awesome ride.

I´m 17 years old and live in Guatemala, Central America. Right now I´m working on an important school asignment. It´s about the pony express. This work will influence my graduation grade a lot, so I realy need all the help I can get. I´m writing to you because I saw your web page, by the way I think it´s great that there is still some one that cares, and I was wondering that maybe you have additional information or some essays you could perhaps send by e-mail. I know this is a big favor but if there is any thing I can do for you in Guatemala... just ask.
I realy hope to hear soon from you whatever the answer is.
Thanks a lot.

Found site when searching for current info about St. Joseph. I was born and raised in St. Joseph. Always had a interest in the Pony Express as a child. I now collect Pony Express postal FDCs. Interested in making contact with any individuals or groups which collect Pony Express postal FDCs. I am 62 years old and now a resident of THAILAND but my roots will always be linked to St. Joseph and its history.

We are winding down and will be transferring the post office to the Marines shortly. It was quite an experience building a post office from the ground up. In December we dedicated the Post Office as the "Frances M. Vega Memorial Post Office" in honor of one of our fellow postal workers who we lost on November 2, 2003. She was enroute to her 2 weeks of leave when the helicopter she was on was shot down over Fallujah, Iraq. She was among 15 soldiers that were killed in that tragedy from the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment. Mail trucks are a common target here in Iraq, but like the pony express riders of old, we get the mail through. It is safe to say that we have handled over 1.5 million pieces of mail to date and it will continue as the marines take their rotation. This number is of course for just this post office. The soldiers of the 3 ACR thank those individuals who kept us in their prayers and their thoughts. Hope to be home soon.
